Stringed Musical Instrument Top Member with Composite Laminate and Core-Free Flex Edge

Year: 2003

This European patent describes a top member (soundboard) for the body of an acoustical stringed instrument, such as a guitar, utilizing a laminated composite material construction. The forward part features an interior portion with paired composite material layers bonded around a core layer, and a surrounding core-free flex edge portion that allows the interior sound board to vibrate more freely than prior art designs. The invention also includes optional rearwardly projecting skirts and sound hole flanges that provide structural reinforcement, reducing the need for traditional bracing while improving tonal, dynamic, and sustain characteristics.

Stringed Musical Instrument Top Member with Composite Laminate Construction

Year: 2001

This European Patent Application by Kaman Music Corporation describes a composite top member for the body of an acoustical stringed instrument, such as a guitar. The top member features a forward part with an interior sound board portion having paired composite material layers bonded around a core layer, surrounded by a core-free flex edge portion that allows more unrestricted vibration than traditional wooden or prior composite soundboards. A rearwardly projecting skirt along the edge of the flex portion slidably fits over the instrument body sidewall during assembly, providing structural reinforcement while reducing the need for internal bracing.

Stringed Musical Instrument Top Member with Composite Laminate Construction and Flex Edge Design

Year: 2001

This patent describes a top member for the body of an acoustical stringed instrument (such as a guitar) that uses a laminated composite construction featuring a pair of composite material layers with a core layer bonded between them in the interior (sound board) portion. A core-free flex edge portion surrounds the interior portion, allowing it to vibrate more freely than prior art laminated sound boards, thereby improving tonal, dynamic, and acoustic performance. A rearwardly projecting skirt extends along the edge of the flex edge portion and slidably fits over the sidewall of the instrument body during assembly, eliminating the need for auxiliary mounting rings or lining strips.

Stringed Musical Instrument Top - Molded Fiberglass Composite Guitar Soundboard

Year: 1984

This patent describes a molded plastic guitar top for acoustic stringed instruments, comprising a single piece of thermosetting plastic sheet molding compound consisting of approximately 40% glass fibers and 60% resin. The sounding board features a circular sound hole with concentric annular reinforcing ribs and rectilinear ribs extending longitudinally that intersect the annular ribs to provide structural reinforcement. The design aims to overcome the limitations of traditional wood soundboards, including susceptibility to humidity, cracking, and inconsistent acoustic properties, while enabling low-cost, uniform mass production.

Ovation Making Sound Board 1982 Soundboard Patent

Year: 1982

A method for making a fiber glass fabric reinforced wood sound board for a stringed musical instrument such as a guitar. A sheet of wood is placed in a shallow mold cavity with a layer of finely woven fiber glass fabric overlying the wood surface, impregnated with a transparent curable liquid resin, and cured under vacuum. The process produces a sound board that is highly resistive to cracking and checking, even at temperature extremes, while maintaining desirable sound amplification qualities at lower cost than conventional methods.

Soundboard for Guitar - Molded Plastic Composite Top with Integral Reinforcing Ribs

Year: 1982

This patent describes a molded plastic guitar top (soundboard) made from a thermosetting plastic sheet molding compound comprising approximately 40% glass fiber and 60% resin. The soundboard features a circular sound hole with concentric annular reinforcing ribs and rectilinear ribs extending longitudinally toward the lower end of the guitar, all projecting from the inner surface of the sounding board. The design incorporates long random glass fibers (3 inches to 2 feet) in the sounding board mat and shorter chopped glass fibers (not greater than one-half inch) in the reinforcing ribs, providing high stiffness, resistance to temperature and humidity changes, and uniform sound-producing qualities.

Year: 1977

This design patent protects the ornamental appearance of a guitar soundboard featuring a distinctive circular/bubble pattern decoration on the upper bout areas. The design shows multiple circles of varying sizes arranged in an organic pattern on both sides of the guitar's face, creating a decorative visual element while maintaining the traditional guitar body shape.

Sound Board for Stringed Instrument (Ovation Guitar Composite Top)

Year: 1975

This patent describes a multiple-ply sound board for the top of a hollow-body guitar, featuring inner and outer plies of oriented graphite fiber material embedded in a resin matrix, sandwiching one or more medial plies of wood. The high stiffness-to-weight ratio of the graphite fiber plies allows the overall sound board thickness to be reduced compared to conventional all-wood sound boards, improving tonal brilliance and harmonic response. The invention was developed by Charles Kaman of Farmington, Connecticut, associated with Ovation Instruments.
