Bob Marley: The Legend of Reggae Born in 1945 in Nine Mile, Jamaica, Bob Marley rose from the slums of Trenchtown to become a global symbol of peace and social justice. As the frontman of The Wailers, he pioneered a unique blend of ska, rocksteady, and reggae, infused with powerful Rastafarian spirituality. His 1977 masterpiece, Exodus, solidified his status as an international superstar, featuring hits that defined a generation. Beyond his voice, Marley’s stage presence was anchored by his instruments. While he is often associated with his Gibson Les Paul Special, he had a significant and practical relationship with Ovation guitars. Specifically, he was frequently seen playing an Ovation Adamas acoustic-electric during his late 1970s tours. The Ovation’s distinctive rounded "Lyrachord" back and multi-soundhole design made it ideal for the high-volume environment of a reggae stage. It allowed Marley to maintain an organic acoustic texture without the feedback issues common in traditional hollow-body guitars. This technical choice highlighted his professional commitment to delivering a clear, resonant message to his massive audiences. Marley passed away in 1981, but his rhythm and philosophy continue to resonate worldwide. Biography generated with the assistance of AI
Mark Knopfler, the legendary frontman of Dire Straits, is world-renowned for his distinctive fingerstyle technique and melodic sensitivity. Born in Glasgow in 1949, he traded a career in journalism for the guitar, eventually defining the sound of the late 70s and 80s with hits like "Sultans of Swing." While he is most famously associated with his red Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Pauls, Knopfler’s tonal palette has always been diverse, leading him to embrace the unique characteristics of Ovation guitars. In the studio and during acoustic sets, Knopfler utilized the Ovation Adamas, a high-end model known for its carbon-fiber top and iconic multi-soundholes. He appreciated the instrument's ability to provide a "hi-fi" acoustic punch that could cut through a dense mix without the feedback issues common in traditional hollow-body guitars. His use of the Ovation is most notable for its clarity and sustain, mirroring his precise, clean playing style. Whether performing solo or layering tracks, the Ovation served as a reliable bridge between his electric precision and organic acoustic warmth. Biography generated with the assistance of AI

Traduction from Japanese original listing: The Adamas officially hit the market in 1977, starting with serial #77. Many still vividly remember the 2007 release, which was a strict reissue of the #47 prototype owned by Ovation founder Charlie Kaman. This particular instrument is a "phantom" piece from the early #70s serial range—part of the pre-release prototype run (#26–#76). While units from #61 onward began to gradually resemble the final production models, being a prototype, it possesses a level of gorgeous craftsmanship not found in standard releases. This is an exceptionally rare find, seldom seen in the USA or even the Japanese market. Key Features & Condition Exquisite Aesthetics: The headstock design matches the production model, but the carved sections are uniquely finished in black. Superior Build: The neck features a 2-ply walnut construction, offering incredible rigidity. Brilliant Finish: The amount of "sparkle" (glitter) in the finish is incomparable—far denser than the early post-#77 production models or even the later reissues. Collector’s Grade: The condition is outstanding. While there are minor signs of use, it remains in top-tier collector's condition with very few scratches. Body Type: Deep Non-Cutaway Top: Carbon Graphite Neck: Walnut Fretboard: Walnut Bridge: Carved Walnut Pickup: Original Pickup Machines: Gold Schaller Nutwidth:44mm Scale :641.35mm Case:Original Hard Case These photos come from an ad published in Japan years ago. These photos come from an ad published in USA years ago. If you are the owner, please feel free to contact me. The original description: This 1978 Ovation Adamas 1, model 1687, serial number 563 91 1687 8, was custom ordered by Glen Campbell from Ovation for legendary producer Brian Ahern, who added it to his arsenal of equipment used on the Enactron Truck on Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and Anne Murray. This very guitar was used on many Emmylou Harris, Glen Campbell, and Johnny Cash recordings, most notably for the killer "bass drum" on the Johnny Cash recording "Bull Rider," in which Brian thumped steadily on the back of the guitar.Click Hereto have a listen! The Adamas was originally designed by Ovation to represent the finest guitar that could be built at the time, using a carbon-fiber top. The original model, the 1687, appeared in reverse blue burst. At the time, the resonant frequency of the Adamas' body was specified at the time of ordering. Brian's Adamas' resonant frequency is 91 Hz. The fourth and fifth digits of an Adamas indicate its resonant frequency. Incidentally, this Adamas' inside label is signed by designer C W Kaman. The Adamas I was the first guitar built by Ovation with the carbon top, as well as the first with the elaborate carved/inlaid soundholes. The Adamas I also included Ovation's top of the line FET preamp. According to Brian, this Adamas was frequently strung with Mapes strings to get a bold, strident tone. This Adamas plays and sounds as good as it looks- detailed, distinctive, and responsive.

Adamas I 1687-B Prototype #0079-96. Many Thanks to Kazuhiro Gamo from Japan for these very nice photos. The description of this unique model: "This adamas is 1687-B(brown)serial number 0079-96(the suffix 96 is the guitars natural frequency responce), so this would be the third production adamas sold. The label inside the guitar is personally signed by ovation founder Charles H Kaman and is dated Jan 1978, it also has the model 1687-B and serial number 0079-96..The other unique thing about this adamas is the color.Brown was offered as a color option later in production but not this darker shade of brown. The regular brown color was a two tone burst finish with much lighter sand brown finish. ----- In my feeling, the neck was a bit thin than mass-production early Adamas. Plus, the leaf ornament on the headstock was made in 2 pieces. The ornament was glued on the base headstock plate." (Jan, 1978)

These photos come from an ad published in Japan years ago. If you are the owner, please feel free to contact me. Here's here's the original description translate from Japanese: Specifications: EXF, BLK Finish, Deep Bowl, Rosewood Fretboard & Bridge, Original Pickup (1 Volume), Schaller Gold Tuners, Hard Case included. Description: A 1687-5 Proto Model!! While the specific details remain a mystery, this Adamas carries a beautiful vintage patina. It shows some light signs of use—such as minor nicks on the tip of the headstock and the back of the neck—but it is in overall excellent condition. The metal hardware on the body’s back plate shows some age-related wear, but this does not affect its functionality. The standout feature is the neck; its feel and texture are remarkably similar to those from the late '70s to early '80s. The wood feels dense and well-seasoned, and the hand-carved detailing on the headstock gives it a wonderful "handmade" aesthetic. Nut Width: 42.5mm Sound: It boasts a unique tonal character with excellent body resonance. Electronics: Equipped with a simple, streamlined 1-volume pickup configuration. Accessories: Comes with a modern Ovation BLK hard case.

Many thanks to Sam for these nice pics. This is the first Adamas 12-string model produced by Ovation (1974/1975). It is one of the first 26 Adamas models that remained in the prototype stage and is certainly the only 12-string prototype. It is believed to be serial number #12, but this is not confirmed yet. The guitar has two holes instead of the shoulder pads found on models #27 to #60 and on subsequent commercially released models. There is an access point on the back of the guitar that was likely used to adjust the bracing of the top and thus fine-tune the sound. The top is black, and the back is made of unpainted Lyrachord. This is a significant piece of the design history of these legendary Adamas models.

Patent for a guitar body design featuring two discrete sound openings located on either side of the longitudinal center line in the upper bout, replacing the conventional single center sound hole. This construction allows for a thinner sound board with improved bracing patterns, enabling better acoustic response particularly in the first and second harmonic modes of vibration. The design is foundational to the Ovation Adamas guitar series.
