Many still vividly remember the 2007 release, which was a strict reissue of the #47 prototype owned by Ovation founder Charlie Kaman. This particular instrument is a "phantom" piece from the early #70s serial range—part of the pre-release prototype run (#26–#76). While units from #61 onward began to gradually resemble the final production models, being a prototype, it possesses a level of gorgeous craftsmanship not found in standard releases. This is an exceptionally rare find, seldom seen in the USA or even the Japanese market. Key Features & Condition Exquisite Aesthetics: The headstock design matches the production model, but the carved sections are uniquely finished in black. Superior Build: The neck features a 2-ply walnut construction, offering incredible rigidity. Brilliant Finish: The amount of "sparkle" (glitter) in the finish is incomparable—far denser than the early post-#77 production models or even the later reissues. Collector’s Grade: The condition is outstanding. While there are minor signs of use, it remains in top-tier collector's condition with very few scratches. Body Type: Deep Non-Cutaway Top: Carbon Graphite Neck: Walnut Fretboard: Walnut Bridge: Carved Walnut Pickup: Original Pickup Machines: Gold Schaller Nutwidth:44mm Scale :641.35mm Case:Original Hard Case These photos come from an ad published in Japan years ago. Year: 1978

Adamas I 1687-B Prototype #0079-96. Many Thanks to Kazuhiro Gamo from Japan for these very nice photos.   The description of this unique model:  "This adamas is 1687-B(brown)serial number 0079-96(the suffix 96 is the guitars natural frequency responce), so this would be the third production adamas sold. The label inside the guitar is personally signed by ovation founder Charles H Kaman and is dated Jan 1978, it also has the model 1687-B and serial number 0079-96..The other unique thing about this adamas is the color.Brown was offered as a color option later in production but not this darker shade of brown. The regular brown color was a two tone burst finish with much lighter sand brown finish. ----- In my feeling, the neck was a bit thin than mass-production early Adamas. Plus, the leaf ornament on the headstock was made in 2 pieces. The ornament was glued on the base headstock plate." (Jan, 1978)

ADAMAS I #1687-5 PROTO

Year: 1970

These photos come from an ad published in Japan years ago. If you are the owner, please feel free to contact me. Here's here's the original description translate from Japanese: Specifications: EXF, BLK Finish, Deep Bowl, Rosewood Fretboard & Bridge, Original Pickup (1 Volume), Schaller Gold Tuners, Hard Case included. Description: A 1687-5 Proto Model!! While the specific details remain a mystery, this Adamas carries a beautiful vintage patina. It shows some light signs of use—such as minor nicks on the tip of the headstock and the back of the neck—but it is in overall excellent condition. The metal hardware on the body’s back plate shows some age-related wear, but this does not affect its functionality. The standout feature is the neck; its feel and texture are remarkably similar to those from the late '70s to early '80s. The wood feels dense and well-seasoned, and the hand-carved detailing on the headstock gives it a wonderful "handmade" aesthetic. Nut Width: 42.5mm Sound: It boasts a unique tonal character with excellent body resonance. Electronics: Equipped with a simple, streamlined 1-volume pickup configuration. Accessories: Comes with a modern Ovation BLK hard case.

The serial is #093-91 and there's no inlays on the fretboard of this guitar like it was usual on the very first model. Many thanks to Tom and François.D from France for these nice pictures and to Joël, the second owner of that guitar that he bought from Marcel Dadi himself. Joël and the "Lilas"... and with Marcel Dadi on stage !!! My Friend Tom with the "Lilas"& Marcel with his "Lilas"!!! Adamas Slothead 12 Strings Prototype

Year: 1974

Many thanks to Sam for these nice pics. This is the first Adamas 12-string model produced by Ovation (1974/1975). It is one of the first 26 Adamas models that remained in the prototype stage and is certainly the only 12-string prototype. It is believed to be serial number #12, but this is not confirmed yet. The guitar has two holes instead of the shoulder pads found on models #27 to #60 and on subsequent commercially released models. There is an access point on the back of the guitar that was likely used to adjust the bracing of the top and thus fine-tune the sound. The top is black, and the back is made of unpainted Lyrachord. This is a significant piece of the design history of these legendary Adamas models.
