Ovation HexFx Preamp
The Ovation HexFX preamp was released in 1999, designed specifically for the high-end Collector’s Series guitars. This innovative system features a hexaphonic pickup, meaning it processes the signal of each string individually rather than blending them into a single mono output. Its most distinctive feature is the 13-pin DIN connector, which allows the guitar to interface directly with MIDI converters and guitar synths like the Roland GR-series. Equipped with a dual-output system, players can send a standard 1/4" mono signal to an acoustic amp while simultaneously using the 13-pin out for digital tracking or synth triggering. The preamp offers a 3-band EQ and a volume slider, providing tactile control over the "natural" acoustic tone even when MIDI is engaged. It remains a legendary piece of gear for experimental guitarists seeking polyphonic clarity and MIDI versatility.
