Stringed Instrument Neck with Peghead featuring Metallic Frame and Foamed Plastic Construction

4,119,009 1978 Charles William Kaman, II US Stringed instrument neck construction using metallic frame with structural foamed plastic and modular peghead design 7 drawings

This patent describes a neck for a stringed musical instrument consisting of a one-piece metallic frame running substantially the entire length of the neck, combined with structural foamed plastic to form the body of the neck including the fingerboard. The peghead portion features a modular design where a mounting plate cooperates with the peghead frame section, allowing different peghead styles and machine head arrangements to be achieved using the same basic frame. This construction enables quantity manufacture of necks at low unit cost while accommodating various peghead designs.
