Ovation Guitar Stringed Instrument Construction with Adjustable Neck Stiffener and Tension Rod

4,172,405 1979 Charles W. Kaman, II US Stringed instrument neck construction with adjustable metallic stiffener and tension rod system for neck-body connection 7 drawings

This patent describes an improved guitar neck construction featuring a metallic stiffener embedded in the main neck part along with a tension rod, both made of high modulus of elasticity materials, allowing precise adjustment of neck bending to counteract string forces. The stiffener includes a rearwardly extending heel at its lower end that connects firmly to the instrument body through threaded fasteners passing through a massive block in the bowl. The system is highly sensitive to adjustment nut rotation, providing a wide range of bending compensation while maintaining a rigid, unyielding connection between the neck and the hollow composite bowl body.
