Josh Homme

Josh Homme is the towering figure of modern rock, best known as the founder of Queens of the Stone Age and a key architect of the "Desert Rock" sound. His journey began in the late 1980s with the seminal stoner rock band Kyuss, where he developed a signature style characterized by down-tuned, blues-inflected riffs and a "robot rock" rhythmic precision. Beyond QOTSA, his prolific career includes the Them Crooked Vultures supergroup and the collaborative Desert Sessions. A defining element of Homme's unique sonic identity is his unconventional choice of equipment, most notably his use of Ovation Ultra GP guitars. While Ovation is typically famous for acoustic instruments, the solid-body Ultra GP (produced briefly in 1984) became Homme's secret weapon. He chose it specifically because it was obscure and lacked the "standard" rock pedigree of a Gibson or Fender. These guitars, often tuned to C Standard, provide the mid-range "honk" and surgical clarity essential to his dry, saturated lead tones. By embracing the quirky ergonomics and distinct output of the Ovation, Homme ensured his sound remained as singular and unpredictable as his songwriting.
