Preston Reed
Preston Reed is an American guitarist who revolutionized the acoustic world by treating the instrument as a complete ensemble—part piano, part drum kit, and part guitar. Emerging in the 1980s, he pioneered the "integrated percussion" style, utilizing two-handed tapping, rhythmic body slapping, and unconventional tunings. While many fingerstyle players opted for traditional wooden guitars, Reed’s career-defining work is inextricably linked to Ovation Guitars. The unique construction of the Ovation provided the structural integrity and sonic response necessary for his high-impact, physical approach to the instrument. He famously favored the Ovation Adamas and various Elite models, valuing the carbon-fiber tops and Lyrachord bowl-backs for their "snappy" and consistent tone. The synthetic body allowed Reed to perform aggressive percussive hits on the soundboard without the risk of cracking common in solid wood, while the multi-soundhole design reduced feedback during amplified live performances. His landmark videos, such as "Ladies Night," showcased how the Ovation's crystalline piezo clarity captured every micro-detail of his percussive attacks. By pushing the Ovation to its physical limits, Reed transformed the acoustic guitar into a rhythmic powerhouse, inspiring a new generation of "modern fingerstyle" players.
